Tip of the Month - December 2023

Keep Mentally Strong

These are trying times in the global world, in most countries, and in the sports scenario. I firmly believe that our coaching role has taken on a more crucial format as we as coaches have to deal with societal, personal, and coaching stress, and have to take care of the well-being of our athletes. We need to encourage them to keep mentally strong and positive.

These recommendations could be emailed to your athletes to encourage them throughout the holidays to stay strong, positive, and motivated.

Some Suggestions:

  • Stay committed to your goals: Remember the reason you started your athletic journey and keep that motivation strong. Visualize future success and use that as a fuel and energizer to stay determined.

  • Create a modified training schedule: Plan a modified schedule to maintain your fitness levels if the regular training routine is not possible or available. Incorporate short workouts, outdoor activities, or even cross-training options that are easily accessible during the holidays.

  • Manage your time effectively: With family gatherings and celebrations, it's crucial to plan personal or training time wisely. Prioritize the training sessions and communicate your needs to your family to be able to plan for alternatives and/or dedicate time set aside for any workout.

  • Focus on recovery: The holiday season can be physically and mentally demanding, so it's important to prioritize rest and recovery. Make sure to get enough sleep, practice mindful relaxation techniques, and listen to your body's needs to avoid burnout.

  • Practice mental visualization: Take advantage of the downtime by incorporating mental training exercises. Visualize your future performances, see yourself succeeding, and mentally rehearse your techniques. This will help maintain your focus and keep your mental game sharp.

  • Seek support from your inner circle: Surround yourself with positive and supportive people, who understand and respect your athletic goals. Share your challenges, victories, and aspirations with them, and allow their encouragement and understanding to uplift you during the holiday season.

The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, but also an opportunity to strengthen mental toughness. By staying committed, managing your time effectively, and prioritizing your mental and physical well-being, you will come back stronger and more determined in the new year.
