Psychological health includes various domains, such as mental health and quality of life. Although mental toughness is the most widely acknowledged concept, its role in sports psychology remains poorly understood. Mental toughness can significantly impact an athlete’s performance and is crucial for sustaining athletic success during intense competitions.
At the outset of this search, thirty-three articles that matched the established keywords were identified. The systematic review of the twelve articles suggested that mental toughness positively impacts athletic performance.
The findings grouped into three major themes: (1) the connection between mental toughness, mindfulness, and psychological skills in athletes; (2) factors influencing athletes' performance, well-being, and ability to face challenges in sports; and (3) the impact of various demographic and educational factors on mental toughness in athletes.
This study emphasizes the effect of mental toughness on both physical performance and mental health in athletes, especially its role in handling stress and pressure during competitive challenges.
Furthermore, it highlights the importance of implementing mental toughness and mindfulness training programs and strong psychological support to improve athletes' mental resilience and overall well-being in sports.
