Fundamental Qualities That Make Teams Great

I usually search for phrases, quotes, sayings, and/or ideologies from well-known Coaches, no matter the Sport, because one can always use all or parts for a personal philosophy. I have always admired Duke Coach “K” for his persistent success and for the way he handled his teams and specific ‘problem’ players who came from various poor Inner-city backgrounds, which took a “lot of ‘doing.”

I developed a Minority Coach education program from 1991 -2004 at the LA former Amateur Athletic Foundation (AAF), Legacy of the 1984 Games (renamed LA 1984). Dealing with Inner-city youth was a big challenge throughout the years, and I really admired Coach “K” for his consistent approach to creating not only outstanding performers but also good people.

Michael William Krzyzewski, nicknamed "Coach K", is an American former college basketball coach. He served as the head coach at Duke University from 1980 to 2022, during which he led the Blue Devils to five national titles, 13 Final Fours (the most of any coach in men's basketball), 15 ACC tournament championships, and 13 ACC regular season titles. Among men's college basketball coaches, only UCLA's John Wooden has won more NCAA championships (10). Krzyzewski is widely regarded as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. He has also coached the United States national team, which he led to gold medals at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics. He was the head coach of the U.S. team that won gold medals at the 2010 and the 2014 FIBA World Cup and an assistant coach for the "Dream Team" at the 1992 Olympics.
